What is Black Myth: Zhong Kui?

Black Myth: Zhong Kui is an upcoming single-player action role-playing game developed by Game Science, the studio behind Black Myth: Wukong. It is the second installment in the Black Myth series and takes its primary inspiration from Zhong Kui, a figure from Chinese folklore known as a god who catches ghosts and demons.

Who is developing it?

Game Science, based in China, is developing the game. Development reportedly started around June 2025 — after Black Myth: Wukong shipped — and studio founder Feng Ji has described the project as an attempt to “freely and boldly” create a completely new title in the Black Myth series rather than a direct Wukong sequel.

What is the story about?

The announced central theme is life and death. Zhong Kui is presented as a “ghost-catching god who wanders between Hell and Earth.” The official lore site describes a world where “the veil between mortals and the spirit realm grows thin,” with Zhong Kui becoming the last line of defense against the forces of darkness.

Who is the main character?

Zhong Kui, a legendary figure in Chinese folklore: a scholar who, after failing his imperial exams, chose death over dishonor and was later appointed commander of ghosts and demons by the Jade Emperor. Game Science’s version leans into the “demon hunter” archetype — the trailer shows him riding a massive tiger into battle.

What platforms is it coming to?

PC and consoles. Game Science’s announcement confirmed the game for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. No store pages exist yet, and no pricing or release window has been announced.

What do we know about gameplay?

Very little has been confirmed. The 15-minute gameplay trailer (20 Aug 2026) shows the protagonist in combat on a work-in-progress build — Game Science notes the game is still in early development, the footage was captured in-engine at 21:9, and the final release may differ. The studio has said it is “still exploring and experimenting” with how to embody Zhong Kui’s abilities in gameplay.

What is still unconfirmed?

  • Release date and year
  • Pricing and pre-orders
  • Open-world vs. level-based structure
  • Any multiplayer or co-op mode
  • New Game+ and end-game systems
  • DLC plans
