Black Myth: Zhong Kui - Five Ghosts & Spirits Explained
The Five Ghosts of Zhong Kui legend - their names, roles, and variants across folklore - and what official footage hints about the spirits in the game.
What are the Five Ghosts?
“The Five Ghosts” (五鬼) is a recurring group in Zhong Kui folklore, but not one fixed roster — different sources name different spirits. The most common traditions include a set based on the five emotions or the five directions. Because sources disagree, we list the main variants rather than picking one “correct” version.
The folklore variants
| Variant | Members | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Five emotion ghosts | The ghosts of joy, anger, sadness, pleasure, and love | Common in opera and temple narrative traditions |
| Five direction ghosts | Spirits of the five cardinal directions (incl. center) | Daoist ritual texts and exorcism practice |
| Named aides | Individual named demons that serve Zhong Kui directly | Story collections; names differ by edition |
Note on sources: variant lists differ across Chinese regional traditions and English-language folklore summaries. Since the game has not named any of them, this page treats all variants as background — not as confirmed game content.
What did the trailers show?
No named ghosts have appeared yet. The 15-minute gameplay trailer (20 Aug 2026) shows two broad spirit types: chattering, low-tier mobs that swarm in loose packs, and at least one large brute built from fused bodies and bone. The reveal trailer also featured small goblin-like demons carrying Zhong Kui’s sword — in legend, spirits serving a spirit commander, which invites obvious comparisons to the Five Ghosts motif.
Which spirits might appear in the game?
Speculation: Zhong Kui’s spirit-servant theme is too central to the legend to ignore. Expect either a named Five Ghosts mechanic (summoned aides, a companion system, or a boss-fight set) or at least one elite enemy group riffing on the five-emotion roster. Nothing is confirmed — this is trailer-informed guesswork.
Why does the ghost theme matter for the game?
The game’s announced theme is life and death, and Zhong Kui’s identity is defined by commanding the dead. Whatever the Five Ghosts become mechanically, their mythic job — servitors that hunt other spirits — is the most natural hook for both enemy design and player-facing summon abilities. The folklore depth here is a big reason the lore pages exist: see Who Is Zhong Kui? for his origin and the lore center page for the full setting.
